An example I found of the communication model is an Interview with Philadelphia 76er’s guard Allen Iverson. Iverson failed to attend a rather important team practice in November and the news leaked to the media. The following day after the team’s game he was bombarded with questions and accusations during an interview. The interview was conducted by local Philadelphia news stations but was later turned into national news at the video was leaked to YouTube and made ESPN headlines.
This is a good example of the communication model because each side interprets the situation in their own way. Whether Iverson knew it or not, his attitude made him look like he was superior to the team and he didn’t need to practice. He even says during the interview “ How the hell am I supposed to make my teammates better by practicing.” His attitude separates himself from his teammates and coaches and he sees nothing wrong that. He claims It was only one practice, and there is nothing wrong with it. The media on the other hand, viewed the situation from a different perspective. They viewed Iverson as a low life, selfish player, who abandoned his team. The two sides conflict during the interview and they eventually agree to disagree. This video just goes to show how important interpretation is in the real world and how essential good and effective communication is.
