Michael Collins’ Independence Speech

In the film Michael Collins, Liam Neeson perfects the communication model. He, as the sender, broadcasts a clear message that the receivers in the audience can easily decode. He wants his audience to know that the Irish will always be rebellious. His voice travels over the medium of air to make his message more intimate to the spectators. The context of the situation is very important to the effectiveness of Collins’ speech. His audience is in support of the rebellion occurring at the time, and so they agree with his polemic beliefs. This context makes the idea more persuasive because the receivers are already in agreement with Collins’ opinions. Neeson practices multiple examples of symbols, including strong gestures, eye contact and movement, to convey his emotional attachment to the topic he is speaking on. He utilizes many features of the communication model in order to deliver a successful message. In his speech, the message is the most effective part of the communication model. Collins’ conveys the idea that no matter who leads the Irish Republic, there will always be a strong sense of rebellion.
